Miro stared with renewed concentration at the wall separating his room from Naomi’s. He reached for the small gilded Bible he always carried with him and searched for an omen, a sign of destiny. “Turn, all ye Gentiles, from your wicked ways,” he read. “Cut from your hearts all lying and deceiving, and all harlotry.” He kept his fingers on the passage, allowed it to seep into his subconscious. He knew now what he had to do, and he was filled with the ecstasy of his beliefs.

He took up the knife and went into the corridor. The pattern of the carpet in the hall was swirling in his mind, turning cartwheels. The crimson and gold curlicues were forerunners of blood about to be shed.
